GENERAL TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Teaching is not simple providing information or the passing on of a skill. It is the art of discovering the psychological and cognitive makeup of a student in order to create the most effective path toward comprehension and application of a given subject matter. True education focuses on student learning, never on the ego of the teacher teaching. Every student and group should be approached individually and taught according to their unique goals, natural strengths, and current circumstances. To be a teacher is to be in a constant state of presence and evolution. For me, teaching is an art form that should be approached with compassion, gratitude and humility.
ARTS TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
There are four quadrants to teaching the arts be it writing, acting, painting or music. Process, product, artistry and craft are all necessary and unique aspects of the successful evolution of an artist. Process is the foundation and should be prioritized and practiced at all times. A healthy process can eventually lead to a strong product even without intention. Product should be approached from a desire to communicate and connect. The audience should be respected and is mandatory in the realization of the final product. Artistry is the natural well of creative genius that is often blocked, armoured or restrained by social, familial and cultural values. A strong process helps the artist to recover childhood access to the creative genius which 98% of children exhibit. This artistry can then be shaped and aided with the cognitive understanding and manipulation of craft in order to transform the initial unconscious ingredients into a final product, effectively an externalization of the internal vision of the creator. Aside from the practice and mastery of these quadrants, knowing when to exercise each quadrant for maximum effect is a mandatory skill of any master artist, teacher or mentor.
